How To Grease Mountain Bike Wheel Bearings
Posted on September 2, 2011 | Automotive Repair.
For any budding mountain bike enthusiast, knowing how to go about greasing your mountain bike wheel bearings is something that will come in useful. On your bike, you will find wheel bearings located behind the cone fixed in place to the axle of the wheel and in front of the cup in the wheel’s hub. They need to be lubricated to maintain functionality, so you should check them frequently to ensure that they still have lubricity.
Determining whether you will need to grease the bearings can be done by taking off the bike wheel whilst supporting the axle, and rotating the wheel slowly. If you find the movement is smooth, the bearings have enough grease. If there is any resistance or bumpiness, the bearings will need servicing before the bike is used.
To complete the task, you will require some disposable cloths, a waterproof variety of grease, and some flat, open wrenches of appropriate size. The first step is to unscrew the locking nut, which can be performed by holding the bearing cone into place using your chosen flat wrench. Ensure that you do not accidentally open the cones at this stage. Next, rotate the axle onto the side that remains locked and unscrew the nut until it has nearly come off the axle. Then you can unscrew the bearing cone in order to reveal the inner mechanisms.
Next, wipe or remove any old grease from your axle and cones, and from the hub’s inside. Check the mechanisms and bearings for deficiencies and replace as necessary. Apply fresh greasing liberally to the races, put the replacement bearings in and apply an additional layer of greasing on top and to the other mechanisms. This can be done fairly quickly but ensure that the mechanisms are thoroughly lubricated. Put the wheel’s hub back together by firmly pushing in the axle whilst fixing the wheel bearings in position.
Transfer the bike’s wheel onto its side again and position the cone firmly in place using your flat wrench while you secure the locking nut. Ensure that there is no play of the mechanisms inside the hub and check that the wheel rotates without any impediment or bumpiness. It might take several attempts at this procedure before the motion of the bike wheel is smooth. If your axle is one with quick release, the cones will be somewhat tighter and you may have to permit some play in the hub.
